There’s a post over at Stewart Home’s Mister Trippy blog announcing that Chris Gray died last week. Chris was a member of the English Section of the Situationist International and then King Mob (see this blog’s header), and was responsible for some of the first English translations of the SI. In 1974, he published Leaving the 20th Century: The Incomplete Work of the Situationist International, which introduced many people to the movement as there weren’t then many freely available translations of the journal. Some thirty years later, it was my first introduction to the SI too.

EDIT (20/5/09): I did have here what I thought was an e-mail exchange from a ‘Chris Gray’ via the Situationist mailing list at Nothingness.org. However, following Stewart’s comment below I’ve realised this wasn’t the same Chris Gray, so I’ve removed it! My mistake, I apologise for any confusion.

Olá,
Comment by de Souza Nogueira Neto May 19, 2009 @ 11:50 pmFalo do Brasil. Gostaria de parabenizar a equipe pelo excelente trabalho neste blog. Abraços. Domingos.
Great post. I did intend to mock the old situationist slogan with my comment on Trippy’s blog, but its resonance in yours turned me to this amazig site. Know I will be coming regularly.
The former guy says: Hello” I speak from Brazil (is he at the phone?). I’d like to congratulate your team for the excellent work on this blog.Hugs,Domingos (the last word probably his name).
Just to let you know that it isn’t some schizophrenic’s insult.

Comment by Ricardo Terrori May 20, 2009 @ 2:51 amI nearly commented on this yesterday but thought it best to confer with Charlie Radcliffe first. Maybe the email reproduced here is a hoax you’ve constructed and if so apologies for this comment. However, in case it isn’t, then perhaps someone has been hoaxing you.
This doesn’t sound like the Chris I knew, and Charlie confirms that it screams FAKE to him too! Charlie says Chris would have told him about an activity like a near daily email to a stiu site, but this is the first he’s heard of it! Chris also hated the net, email and mobile phones. He told both Charlie and me that if we wanted to contact him we should use his landline or write a letter. My recollection is that he did have email when I first contacted him but he didn’t like it and stopped using it about 5 years ago. Charlie can’t recall ever having exchanged emails with him.
I put Chris and Charlie back in contact because they’d drifted apart over the years (they’d both known my mother but through different scenes), and once they were back in touch Charlie was in more regular contact with Chris than me. Like me, Charlie thought the words you quote sounded nothing like Chris he knew. Chris was very articulate and liked to be very clear in his speech. He was a no unnecessary verbiage and absolutely no bullshit guy.
Charlie, who has read a draft of the book Chris was working on about acid, also tells me that Chris’ recent writing was very straightforward and clear in its construction. So we think it extremely unlikely the stuff you quote above was written by the Chris Gray of King Mob and the Situationist International.
That said, thanks for passing on the sad news about Chris’ death to readers of your blog. I’ve been enjoying your posts for some time!
Comment by Stewart Home May 20, 2009 @ 6:37 pmThere have been a very unfunny guy showing up in Stewart’s blog recently, that seems to have exactly that kind of modus operandi. Well, there is lots of that kind of fakes on the net, and situ posseurisn is nothing new.
I have read the e-mail you published, and even to me, it didn’t fit with what could be Mr. Gray’s (RIP) “profile”.
I think maybe to have kept the mail, with the further comment by you, could be more clarifying for people just arriving to your blog.
Best Regards
Ricardo
Comment by Ricardo Terrori May 21, 2009 @ 1:16 pmI’ve taken it down because it was my mistake: I’d assumed the Chris Gray on the mailing list was the English Situ Chris Gray, but it seems like its just a coincidence that they share the same name. As far as I can tell, theres no reason to suspect anyone is identity-theiving or Luther Blissett-escapades. Anyway, all this detracts somewhat from the sad fact of Chris’s death, which is what I was originally trying to bring attention to!
Comment by sam May 21, 2009 @ 1:49 pm[...] few more posts about Chris’ death can be found on the History Is Made At Night, Boredom Is Always Counter-Revolutionary and Artosphere blogs. If you want to read Life of Osho by Chris Gray there is a free download [...]
